Legends Behind

The Sailormoon manga has influences from other stories/legends in everyday literature.

Slpeeping Beauty

In the Grimm Brothers fairytale, Sleeping Beauty, a newborn princess has a curse placed on her at her christening, by an angry uninvied guest. The curse will be fufilled when the princess is sixteen and pricks her finger on a rose causes her to sleep. The curse is broken when the princess is kissed by her true love, a prince. This is VERY similar to a story in the manga. Back on the moon, when Princess Selenity was born and being christened, an angry Nehelenia crashed the ceremony. She was angry at not being invited and placed a curse on Princess Selenity that said she would not live to take her place on the throne. Later on in the future, Nehelenia is trying to take over Earth. She's placed a curse which causes a black rose to grow in Mamoru's heart and later Usagi's. But that manage to defeat her curse with the power of their love and everyone's help. You can see how the two stories are similar. The curse at birth, the roses, and finally love overcoming it.

Romeo and Juliet

The Shakespeare story of Romeo and Juliet is similiar to the past romance of Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion. Both romance are forbidden. Both end on tragedy when the female kills herself using her lover's sword. (Or in Juliet's case, his dagger.)
